Introduction and Original Front Matter
Introduction to the Digital Edition
This Rotunda edition incorporates the complete text of the 4-volume print edition,
The Letters of Christina Rossetti, ed. Antony H. Harrison (Charlottesville:
The University Press of Virginia, 1997–2004). Please note the following differences
between the print edition and the online edition:
- Front matter has been consolidated (see individual sections for derivation)
- “Abbreviations of Manuscript Locations” and “Other Abbreviations” from the
print editions have been consolidated, but instead of being presented as lists,
they are dynamically linked to text of abbreviations. Expansions appear within
pop-up windows when you mouse over an abbreviation. Example: CGR
- Newly discovered letters that appeared at the end of Volume 4 are integrated
into their chronological sequence
- The back-of-the-book indexes have been consolidated into a single index
- A few minor errors in the editorial and index sections of the print edition
have been silently corrected
- Illustrative graphic material from the print edition has not been included in this
edition
- Deleted material shown between <angle brackets> in the print edition is
shown using strikeout text.
Letters dated by William Michael Rossetti are indicated in the print
edition with a caret (^) in the dateline; in the online edition, the date
is printed with dotted underlining and a pop-up gloss. Example: 5/10/1883
“Black-border” letters (i.e., letters written during a mourning period using
black-bordered envelopes and/or notepaper) are indicated in the letter
heading by the icon to
the left (replacing the print notation “[Black border]).”
