Daniel Hailes to John Adams

12 May 1785

May 12th. 1785.

Mr. Hailes presents his Compliments to Mr. Adams and has done himself the honor of calling after him to acquaint him that the inclosed letter from Charlestown was sent him by the Duchess de [Brisac], into whose hands it fell by mistake, and by whom it was inadvertently open’d: As it appears that it is written by one American Gentleman fo[r] another, perhaps Mr. Adams may be acquainted with one of the parties and may have it in his power to send it to the person for whom it is intended.
