the Commissioners of the Board of Treasury to John Adams

Sir Board of Treasury August 1st. 1785

Congress by their Resolve of the 15th: April 1784. (Copy of which we have by this Opportunity transmitted to Colo. Smith) have directed this Board to procure a Gold hilted Sword for Baron Steuben.

As we cannot ascertain the Sum necessary for this Object, we must Request the Favors of you to advance to Colo. Smith what you shall judge adequate for carrying the Resolve into Execution, and to Reimburse yourself by a Draft on the Commissioners of the Dutch Loans, at Amsterdam.—
