John Jay to John Adams

3 Aug. 1785

Dr Sir Office for foreign Affairs 3d: August 1785

I have the Honor of transmitting to you herewith enclosed, a Copy of a Letter from J. Carter to the Honble: D. Howell Esquire of 19th: April 1785, and also a Copy of my Report on that Letter, which having been approved by Congress was referred to me to take Order.—

These Papers respect the Detention of Americans captured during the War; and I am persuaded that nothing on your Part will be wanting to restore those brave Men to the Enjoyment of Liberty and their Country, who have done & suffered so much for both.—

With great Esteem and Regard / I am Dr: Sir / Your most ob.t and very hble. Servt.

John Jay
