To James Madison from Albert Gallatin, 5 January 1806

January 5, 1806

There is no recommendation of Naval officer for New Orleans but that in favr. of Mr. Clay and one by Lovell the late incumbent in favr. of his Deputy Hearsay of whom I know nothing. Shall I write & to whom? Claiborne & Ths. H. Williams are the only men with whom I correspond. They had both recommended Clay. I know no one nearer to whom to apply.
