PGWDE News

3 new volumes added
(4 March 2009) The full content of three letterpress volumes published since PGWDE was first prepared has now been added to the online edition. These volumes are Revolutionary War Series 15: May–June 1778 (published in 2006), Revolutionary War Series 16: July–September (2006), and Presidential Series 13: 1 June–31 August 1793 (2007). All their documents have been integrated into the chronological and print-edition tables of contents, and their index entries edited and added to the consolidated index.
Index upgrade
(15 October 2007) “See” and “See also” entries from the letterpress edition indexes have been added to the PGWDE consolidated index. This required hand correction of hundreds of entries for consistency with entry forms in the online edition. (Editing of “See also” entries is ongoing, as is normalization of subentry forms in the index.)
French-language support
(12 September 2007) With the addition of a French-language module to Rotunda’s MarkLogic Server software, PGWDE now supports stemmed searching on French words. For example, a search on “permettre” will also match permets and permettez; a search on “respectueux” will match respectueuse(s).
PGWDE reviews
(4 September 2007) The PGWDE has recently received two strong recommendations from reviewers in the library community. Cheryl LaGuardia’s eReview for Library Journal awards it a 9.5 on her 10-point scale. A review in the August 2007 issue of CHOICE calls PGWDE “a notable achievement” that “weaves a web of cross-referencing and indexing that permits researchers an ease of access not possible using only the print” edition, and ranks it as “highly recommended” for all academic collections (CHOICE Reviews Online, August 2007 [articles viewable by subscribers only]).
Visited Links now styled
(20 August 2007) In contents lists, “visited” links to documents and hierarchical categories (for example, years or decades in the Chronology; volumes or series in the Print view) are now presented in a faded color, to make it easier to see which parts of PGWDE one has viewed. (Previously, “visited” links were not distinctively colored.)
Repository Symbols updated
(20 June 2007) The list of Repository Symbols and Abbreviations used in PGWDE has been completely updated to reflect the most current usage according to the MARC Code List for Organizations. (Repositories not yet in the MARC list have been assigned abbreviations following the MARC code structure guidelines.) In addition, all obsolete abbreviations have been replaced with current ones within the text of PGWDE. Where a repository abbreviation now differs from one used in the print edition, mousing over the abbreviation will note the fact and provide the former abbreviation in brackets following the expansion of the repository name.
Improved author/recipient search
(30 May 2007) Names of authors and recipients on the search page have been regularized. The original lists of names were generated from information taken from the document headings in the print volumes, leading to duplicate or inconsistent name forms in some cases. PGW editors have provided normalized forms for each name, meaning that there is now a one-to-one correspondence between name and person.
