To Amasa Leland Stanford

Dear Governor Stanford, 28th Oct. 1891.

We have newspaper accounts of the opening of the University under conditions giving the highest promise of ever-increasing beneficence to mankind. I congratulate you and Mrs. Stanford with all my heart; none the less so, I hope that you understand, because it has been thought inexpedient that our connection with your noble undertaking should continue.

There are yet to be coming up questions of the development of the horticultural and landscape departments of your scheme to which we have given a good deal of study. When you shall have appointed your Professor in this department we shall be glad, if it would be agreeable to you and to him, to talk over the subject with him, on a friendly, not a business footing.

Sincerely Yours,

Fredk Law Olmsted.
