To Samuel Cabot, Jr.

My Dear Doctor Cabot, 92 Grand St., October 22d, 1857.

I have begun writing an article which I intend for the “Atlantic Monthly” based on Weston’s “Progress of Slavery,” which I consider the most respectable book which has been published in my time in the United States. As he has publickly referred to the chances of occupying Neosho by free men, I mean to treat that point frankly, and confidently, and especially advertise the advantages which milder climates offer to emigrants.

Please write me if Dr. Webb has returned & if he brings any further information regarding the country.

Write me also if your Society “still lives, “& how you feel & what you expect in Boston—Kansas-ward and politically, if you have time.

I have further letters from England intimating great interest in the Neosho project, but I take it any movement is at present out of the question.

Everything is black & blacker in New York. Slavery has nothing to gain however by the present condition of things.

Yours most cordially

Fred. Law Olmsted.
