To Parke Godwin

My Dear Godwin [c. October 1855]

We are very glad you undertake the Calhoun, but after striving to manage the material engaged purposely for December we can not without making the number very strong meat make place for it. We will try to do so if you particularly wish us to but would prefer postponing it to January, when it would be made the first article probably.

Would not this on the whole be better? We shall be glad if you think so.

But at any rate—I need not say, we shall be glad to have it & to have it as thorough and distinct for Democracy as possible. Display the real fundamental theory of Government according to Calhoun without the modifications required by temporary & existing things, & place the Democratic theory by its side. That’s what is wanted.

Of course we will pay you your own price, if it is for a year’s labor.

Yours Truly

F. L. O.
