To Samuel Cabot, Jr.

Dear Sir, From the office of the Evening Post
Tuesday p. m., June 30th 1857

I find that no distribution of circulars or pamphlets is allowed at Castle Garden. It is possible however that I may succeed by some subterfuge or round-about method in accomplishing it.

Mr. Kapp, the President of the German Republican Association has promised to see Mr. Garrigue, President of the German Society and Commissioner of Emigration, and I shall trust to their judgment to affect the best distribution.

With regard to the number, to be used here, it strikes me that 1000 is much too small a quantity for a free general distribution, and too large for a private, personal distribution. I will send you 2000, however, and advise further after hearing from Mr. Garrigue.

I am yet not able to ascertain satisfactorily about the naVigable quality of the Red River above the raft. Land travel for our district nearly always commences I suspect from Port Caddo. The passage once made through the raft has closed again.

A most attractive account of the upper region, & the most particular, I have found, is in “DeBow’s Resources.” “Texas–Red River.

Yours very truly,

Fred. Law Olmsted
