To Mason Brothers

Messrs. Mason Brothers,
Dear Sirs;
Bear Valley, June 8th 1864.

The cases which you shipped by the Isthmus have all arrived—the books in good order.

I requested that if Mr. Knapp should order for me any of the books which Mrs. Olmsted or myself ordered you would cancel one of the orders so that no duplicates should be sent. I suppose this request being made verbally was forgotten for there were in the cases above thirty duplicates, including most of the Waverly novels, Irving’s Washington and Prescott’s Conquest of Mexico. Of the latter there were three sets. The third was put in I presume by mistake instead of Ferdinand and Isabella which was omitted. The following volumes were also wanting to complete the sets: Of the Dickens series, Little Dorrit, Nicholas Nickleby, Old Curiosity Shop, and Christmas Tales. Of Prescott’s Philip the Second only three volumes came.

Please send me the missing volume and if Sheldon’s edition of Dickens is incomplete please supply the deficiency from any other good edition.

To avoid the expense of returning the duplicate and triplicate volumes I will present them to a public library and you can correct your account accordingly, ie. charge the triplicate set of Prescott’s Mexico to me; the duplicates I understand to have been already charged, or paid for by Mr. Knapp.

I wish you also to send me:

Thackery’s Pendennis, Vanity Fair, The Virginians, The Newcombes and Henry Esmond.

Ten Acres Enough.

Carle Benson’s Letter to Dr. Henry Halford Jones &c—a pamphlet published sometime last winter I suppose, in New York.

Goldwin Smith’s Letters —Ticknor & Fields.

Dyer’s book upon the American question. I don’t know the title; originally published in letters to the London Spectator and afterwards issued in book form: not republished in America as far as I know.

Wakefield’s work or works on Emigration and Colonization. I am afraid you will have to send to England for this. If necessary I will thank you to do so.

L’amis des Enfants (D’Aquin? Author).

Please send the above by Panama, “Slow Freight.”

I am writing to Mr. Curtis today and shall tell him if he has anything to send me it can come through you. There may be something [231page icon]from the Harpers come in, to go in the case. If so please pay any charges on my account.

Unless your shipment is likely to be made very soon please send the fourth volume of Philip the Second [by] mail, also the Wakefield book if not to come from England.

If you are giving up the book business please hand this to Mr. Grady and if you would like me to make other disposition of my books please let me know.

Very Truly Yours

Fred. Law Olmsted.
