| My Dear Sir, | Bear Valley, Oct 31st 1864 |
Yours of the 27th is received.
I shall do everything in my power to secure the success of the Union party. No man in the state desires that success more than I do.
The Union organization of the County is not efficient or convenient, and the State Central Committee have given it little encouragement. The number of newcomers in the County is very great. It is impossible therefore to judge with confidence of the result.
Of this you may be certain. This County—this part of it, at least,—can never be a safe or practicable centre of an insurrectionary movement, as suggested by the Governor.
The Copperheads are working here with considerable zeal but with an evidently hard effort to appear confident and to inspire confidence. Their chief weapon is gasconade. I had the enclosed posted at their last demonstration. No takers and much swearing.
[273I shall be grateful to you for any suggestions and am, Sir—
Fred. Law Olmsted.
